Generation X – scientifically unsuccessful

According to Wikipedia, Generation X (Gen Xers) are the children of the Silent Generation and older Baby Boomers – which includes myself. Demographers and researchers typically use the birth years of Gen Xers ranging from the early-to-mid 1960s to the early 1980s, including all my children. The younger Gen Xers were the first children to have access to computers in their homes and schools. In the 2008 book, "X Saves the World: How Generation X Got the Shaft but Can Still Keep Everything from Sucking", author Jeff Gordinier "contrasts Gen Xers to Baby Boomers, saying Boomers tend to trumpet their accomplishments more than Gen Xers do, creating what he describes as 'elaborate mythologies' around their achievements. Gordiner cites Steve Jobs as an example, while Gen Xers, he argues, are more likely to 'just quietly do their thing'."

My personal example confirming Gordiner's opinion is Steven Weinberg (born 1933, Nobel Prize 1979 for his achievements in the Elementary Particle Physics), whose book "The First Three Minutes: A Modern View of the Origin of the Universe" (1977) was a typical example of such 'elaborated mythology' surrounding his own achievements. The result was opposite to Weinberg's expectation. After reading his book I became a doubter about Elementary Particle Physics' ability to successfully explain the Origin of the Universe.

Gen Xers scientists like Sabine Hossenfelder were still too young in 1970s and 1980s to note the danger of these 'elaborated mythologies' related to their idols achievements (such as Murray Gell-Mann, Steven Weinberg, Abdus Salam, Sheldon Glashow, and others). Particle Physics positioned itself at the very pinnacle of not only Physics but the entirety of Science itself during the '70s and '80s. The young students of this relatively narrow scientific branch were educated in the arrogant conviction that there is only – and will never be any other – serious science outside of Elementary Particle Physics. Thirty years later, Sabine Hossenfelder is the first Gen Xer courageous enough to brake the mythology tradition and to write a book about her unsuccessful generation ("Lost in Math").

Yet even she can't fully brake from this vicious educational circle – having failed to explore the underpinnings behind her generation's misery at their inability to find solutions beyond the range of their own scientific discipline. Rather, she tries to assign blame for their lack of successful research to the excessive “beauty expectation” within the theories of Particle Physics (and practically the entirety of Physics). Her doubting the beauty of Nature is like doubting the beauty of our all existence – which is to me a kind of crime with which I simply can't comply.

Therefore the natural conclusion is that Gen Xer scientists are themselves to blame for their inability to escape their arrogant education. The solutions to their problems have been available for decades but lie beyond the traditional limits of Elementary Particle Physics. Yet hope awaits ... with at least one such example that can help to pivot their sense of misery into a sense of beautiful mystery.

Schade nur, dass die meisten traditionellen Physiker immer noch glauben, dass ausgerechnet die Elementar-Teilchen Physiker, die an der Spitze der Physik in diese Sackgasse 40 Jahre lang gerannt sind, dieselbe jetzt wieder zurück führen sollten. Das ist ein gewaltiger Denkfehler. Weil eben diese Physiker, die nie in diese Sackgasse mitlaufen wollten, heute viel besser in der Lage sind, der ganzen Naturwissenschaft eine neue Richtung anbieten zu können. Unsere "Unified Science" ist eben so ein Vorschlag. Dazu muss man aber bereit sein den ganzen Ballast der letzten Jahrzehnte (wenn nicht sogar Jahrhunderte) ablegen zu wollen. to the book by Sabine Hossenfelder
"Lost in Math; How Beauty leads Physics astray"
(Basic Books, NY, June 2018)

The book by Sabine Hossenfelder ends with two simple sentences:
"The next breakthrough in physics will occur in this century.
It will be beautiful."
I am writing my comments here because the "next" breakthrough in physics does occur just now. And it is really beautiful.

But let us start at the beginning. Who is she? I cite from the book envelope. Chris Quigg, distinguished scientist emeritus from Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory says: "Born too late to savor the heady era when the standard model of particle physics came together, Sabine Hossenfelder is impatient for new waves of discovery. Might the pace of insights be slowing because illusions of mathematical beauty have beguiled her fellow theorists? Lost in Math chronicles her quest - - through interviews and conversations - - to set her own course for exploration." All important has been said with that.

My own two simple sentences concerning the book Lost in Math are following.
* The book is invaluable.
* The book is coming at the right time from the right person, a member of the right generation of scientists.

My own generation was also "born too late to savor the heady era" of the 20th-century physics. But already in my generation there were (though not many) scientists intuitively feeling that the then emerging standard model is leading physics astray from Nature. It is hard to say, but Sabine's generation was a necessary human "sacrificial lamb" on the altar of the "temple of knowledge". As Stephan Schwartz (compare my website) said in one of his texts: "Paradigm crisis is the last stage in a process of scientific death."

Sabine Hossenfelder writes in page 1: "I am one of some ten thousand researches whose task is to improve our theories of particle physics. ... But my generation has been stunningly unsuccessful." I am sorry for Sabine and her generation (the generation of my children), but their lack of success in theoretical physics (not only particle physics) was the only convincing way to demonstrate to the (scientific and financial) world that the way down to subatomic elementary particles was a blind alley of science. So the lost decades of life of Sabine's generation are not entirely lost for science. They were necessary to force the actually running paradigm change in science. And now this (seemingly lost) generation is the first (and the best) one who can change their frustration into a new excitement along the new-paradigm Unified Physics. Though this Unified Physics is completely different from the "traditional" particle physics of the second half of 20th century, it should be no problem to study it for those scientists who are really "impatient for new waves of discovery", as Sabine Hossenfelder does.

What is an especially valuable aspect of the book "Lost in Math", it gives us (in Appendix C) many hints how one can help to reach the new knowledge. I quote those most interesting from my point of view.
* Don't forget to discuss "known problems".
* Don't discount research just because it's not presented excitingly enough or because few people work on it.
* Read other researchers' work and make your criticism publicly available.
* You can either produce loads of papers that nobody will care about ten years from now, or you can be the seed of ideas that will still be talked about in a thousand years.
* Offer reeducation support, one- to two-year grants that allow scientists to learn the basics of a new field and to establish contacts.
* Criticism of other people's work or negative results are presently underappreciated. But these contributions are absolutely essential for the scientific method of work.

Science of Consciousness – firstly, the Matter of Definitions

In the "HuffPost" from 05/01/2017 ("Can There Be a Science of Consciousness?"), authors Deepak Chopra and
Pankaj S. Joshi correctly note the actual circumstances related to Consciousness Research: "The possibility of a
science of consciousness, which would involve a thorough explanation of mind and how it relates to matter,
can’t begin until the obstacles in its path are removed and old accepted assumptions are overturned."
